THE JOB APPLICATION CHECKLIST
Before You Hit “Send”
By Aisha Sajid
Use this checklist every time you apply for a job. One small mistake can make a strong candidate look careless.
1. Before Applying
☐ I read the complete job description, not just the title.
☐ I meet most of the important requirements.
☐ I understand what the company actually does.
☐ I checked whether the position is onsite, remote or hybrid.
☐ I checked the location, working hours and other important conditions.
☐ I followed any specific application instructions mentioned in the post.
2. Your CV
☐ My CV is updated for this particular role.
☐ The most relevant experience appears prominently.
☐ I have included measurable achievements where possible.
☐ My skills match the requirements of the position.
☐ There are no spelling, grammar or formatting errors.
☐ My contact information is correct.
☐ My LinkedIn link works.
☐ My CV is preferably saved as a PDF.
Never send:
my cv.pdf
updated cv.pdf
final cv new.pdf
Use:
Aisha_Sajid_Marketing_Manager_CV.pdf
3. Your Email
☐ My subject line clearly states the position.
Example:
Application for Marketing Manager | Aisha Sajid
☐ I addressed the recruiter professionally where their name was available.
☐ I mentioned exactly which position I am applying for.
☐ My email briefly explains why I am relevant to the role.
☐ I did not simply write “CV attached.”
☐ I attached the correct CV before sending.
4. Your Cover Letter
☐ It is customized for the company and position.
☐ It explains my relevant experience without repeating my entire CV.
☐ It shows how I could add value to the company.
☐ It is concise and easy to scan.
☐ I removed the name of the previous company if I reused a template.
Important: A generic cover letter sent to 50 companies looks like a generic cover letter sent to 50 companies.
5. Your LinkedIn
Before applying, assume they might search your name.
☐ Professional profile photo
☐ Clear headline
☐ Updated experience
☐ Relevant skills
☐ Strong About section
☐ Portfolio/work samples where relevant
☐ No major contradiction between my CV and LinkedIn
6. The 60 Second Final Check
Before clicking SEND, ask:
Did I mention the correct company?
Did I mention the correct position?
Is the subject line clear?
Did I attach the CV?
Is the filename professional?
Did I follow the instructions?
Would I shortlist this application if I were hiring?
If all seven answers are YES, send it.
BONUS TIP
Don't measure your job search only by:
“How many jobs did I apply for today?”
Measure:
“How many strong, relevant applications did I send?”
20 targeted applications can be more valuable than 100 careless ones.
Save this checklist and use it before every application.
